Bosch sells power tools under two colors. Blue is the professional line,
with a trade service network and parts availability measured in decades.
Green is the DIY line, built to a different duty cycle and a different
price.
Confusing the two is the most common mistake made with this brand. A green tool
is not a defective blue one — it is a machine designed for occasional use, and
priced accordingly.
The green machine on this site
The PBD 40 bench drill is green, and it is nonetheless the drill press we
put first here for woodworking. Its 90 mm (3.54 in) quill stroke is nearly double what
the competition offers, and it is the only drill press on this site that states
its capacity in wood — 40 mm (1.57 in) — separately from its capacity in steel.
That is a useful reminder that line color tells you about duty cycle and
support, not about whether a machine suits a specific job.
Where it sits
Green for occasional use, blue when the tool earns its keep. And read the
specification either way: on this site, a green Bosch published more useful
figures than several blue ones.
