The best router bits for 2026

The aisle that never ends: the German catalog alone lists over 150,000 of them. We cut through it by job — straight and spiral for grooves, flush trim for templates, bearing-guided profiles for edges — plus what separates a bit that stays sharp from one that burns on the third meter.

What we recommend

  1. Pair of up-cut spiral router bits, product photograph

SpeTool Upcut spiral, 8 mm shank, 32 mm cut, pair

A spiral bit lifts its waste out of the cut instead of packing it in. For grooves and mortices, nothing straight competes.

    • Up-cut spiral clears waste upward, so a deep groove does not pack
    • Solid carbide rather than brazed tips
    • Up-cut lifts the top fibers, so the surface edge can chip on veneer

Best for: Grooves, housings and mortices in solid timber and ply

ASNOMY AS0161-1PST6, 6 mm straight bit, 8 mm shank

For which need, in router bits

Using large bits

Shank diameter governs rigidity. A large bit on a thin shank vibrates and leaves ripples on the edge.

Hiltex 10108, 24-piece set, 1/4 in shank

Building a starter set

A boxed set covers the common profiles for far less than bits bought singly, provided you accept average quality.

Bosch RBS030MBS, 30-piece set

Fitting your router's collet

A twelve-millimeter shank will not go into an eight-millimeter collet, and nothing fixes that. The stated shank diameter is the first sort, before the cutter's profile.

Akylin AJR000807DELK slot cutter set, 8 mm shank

For whom, within router bits

First steps
A straight bit, a round-over and a flush-trim cover the essentials. The rest is bought project by project, not in advance.
Table work
Large profile bits demand a 12 mm (0.47 in) shank and a powerful machine. On 8 mm (0.31 in) they vibrate and become dangerous.
Templates and copies
A bearing-guided flush-trim bit turns a router into a copying machine. It is probably the most useful bit in the workshop.

What each advantage costs, on router bits

8 mm (0.31 in) shank against 12 mm (0.47 in)
12 mm (0.47 in) is more rigid and limited to a catalog of large bits; 8 mm (0.31 in) opens a wider and cheaper choice while capping out on big diameters.
Boxed set against chosen pieces
A boxed set is far cheaper per bit and contains profiles you will never use. Two good bits beat fifteen mediocre ones.
Solid carbide against inserts
Solid carbide can be re-sharpened a few times; inserts are rotated then replaced without taking the tool out of service. On large bits, inserts win.

Before buying router bits

Should I buy 6, 8 or 12 mm (0.47 in) bits?

According to the machine's collet, and many accept several diameters. 8 mm (0.31 in) is the best domestic compromise; 12 mm (0.47 in) becomes necessary for large profile bits.

How far should the bit go into the collet?

Almost fully, then back out two or three millimeters. Bottomed out, the bit jams; not engaged enough, it pulls out.

How many passes for a deep cut?

Two to four depending on depth and the density of the wood. A single twenty-millimeter pass burns the wood and puts the bit at risk.

Why does my bit burn the wood?

A bit clogged with resin, too slow a feed, or a rotation speed too high for the diameter. Large bits must run markedly slower.

How do I clean a bit?

A resin cleaner and a brass brush, never an abrasive that would attack the carbide edge. A clean bit cuts like a new one.

Do bearing-guided bits wear out?

The bearing does, and it is replaced separately for a couple of euros. A seized bearing burns the very edge it was meant to follow.

What speed for what diameter?

The larger the bit, the more you must slow down. A 50 mm (1.97 in) bit at full speed goes well beyond its permissible rim speed.

Will a large-diameter cutter run in a small router?

The maximum safe diameter depends on the speed and the base opening. A fifty-millimeter panel cutter wants a machine that slows down, otherwise the rim speed becomes dangerous.

What to remember about router bits

Three good bits beat a set of fifteen. Choose the shank diameter according to the bits you are aiming at, slow down on large diameters, and clean off the resin — a clogged bit behaves exactly like a worn one.
