Knives decide whether a planer leaves a surface you can finish or one you have to sand. We compare HSS against carbide, disposable double-edged knives against resharpenable ones, and the indexed inserts of a helical head — including what a full rotation really costs.
Exactly the section of the published HSS blades on this shelf, in tungsten carbide instead — a direct substitution.
Length
82 mm (3.23 in) — 3-1/4 in
Width
5.5 mm (0.22 in)
Thickness
1.2 mm (0.05 in) · The published HSS blades on this shelf are 82 × 5.5 × 1.2 mm (3.23 × 0.22 × 0.05 in) — the same section
Material
TCT tungsten carbide
Type
Reversible, stated to double the lifespan of each blade
Claims
Stated to last up to 30 per cent longer and to be 10 per cent sharper than standard tungsten carbide blades · The FOXBC blades on this shelf publish the same two percentages, word for word, and neither names the standard it compares with
Quantity
10 blades, in a plastic case
Fits
Makita, Bosch, DeWalt, Black & Decker, Ryobi and other 3-1/4 in hand planers

Publishes all three dimensions, and they match the published HSS set here exactly
Carbide holds an edge far longer than HSS on abrasive or painted stock
The 30 and 10 per cent claims name no standard to compare against
Best for: A hand-held electric planer on painted or reclaimed stock, where HSS blunts in a meter
A thicker, wider 82 mm (3.23 in) blade than the rest of this shelf — and the longest machine list on it.
Length
82 mm (3.23 in) — 3-1/4 in
Width
29 mm (1.14 in) · Five times the 5.5 mm (0.22 in) of the other 82 mm (3.23 in) blades on this shelf
Thickness
3 mm (0.12 in) · Two and a half times the 1.2 mm (0.05 in) of the other 82 mm (3.23 in) blades here

Publishes all three dimensions, and they are different from every other 82 mm (3.23 in) blade here
Names fourteen machines, which no other listing on this shelf approaches
Twenty-nine millimeters wide is not interchangeable with the 5.5 mm (0.22 in) blades on this shelf
Best for: One of the fourteen named planers, where the head takes a solid 3 mm (0.12 in) blade and not a shim
Disposable knives are flipped once then replaced, with no height setting. It is the system that wastes the least time.
Hardwoods and exotics
Carbide lasts far longer than high-speed steel on abrasive species, and chips more easily on an impact.
Chasing surface quality
On interlocked grain, no straight knife beats an insert head. If finish is paramount, it is the machine that needs changing, not the knives.
What each advantage costs, on planer knives
Disposable against re-sharpenable
Disposables go in with no setting and are thrown away; thick knives are re-sharpened and demand precise height setting. The second costs less long-term and takes time.
High-speed steel against carbide
High-speed steel re-sharpens easily and dulls fast; carbide lasts a long time and chips on a knot or a grain of sand.
The planer brand's knife or a pattern one
Generics often cost half, with a sometimes approximate geometry. A badly dimensioned knife is an imbalance at high speed: this is not where to economize.
Before buying planer knives
When should knives be changed?
When the surface goes fuzzy or the machine labors at the same depth. A regular, pronounced line signals a nicked knife, not a worn one.
Can a disposable knife be flipped?
Yes, once: both edges are ground. The seat must be cleaned before refitting, since a trapped shaving is enough to throw off the height.
How do I set knife height?
With a straightedge or a magnetic jig, all of them at the same height to a hundredth. A knife higher than the others works alone and wears twice as fast.
Is one nicked knife enough to spoil the cut?
Yes, it leaves a regular line down the whole length. You can sometimes shift a knife slightly sideways so the nicks no longer line up.
Does reclaimed timber damage knives?
Very fast. A nail destroys a whole set, and embedded grit dulls them within a few meters. Metal detector and brush before feeding.
Can I sharpen them myself?
Thick knives, yes, with a jig and a stone or a wet grinder. Thin disposable knives, no: their geometry does not allow it.
Should all the knives be changed together?
Always. Knives of differing wear unbalance the block and give an irregular surface.
Do a set of knives need to be weight-matched?
Yes: two knives of different mass unbalance the cutterblock and make the machine vibrate at full speed. Sets sold as matched pairs exist for that reason.
What to remember about planer knives
Knives are changed as a set, at the same height to a hundredth, and checked as soon as a fuzzy surface appears. The length is imposed by the machine, and generics are the one place in this aisle where economy is paid for in vibration.

Planer knives in one table
A column holds only if four machines in five publish the figure. Below that, it would compare what the manuals left out.
Specifications: manufacturer sheets for woodworking machines and the matching Amazon product pages. Prices and availability: Keepa. Every figure in this table names its source.
