The best band saw blades for 2026

A band saw that cuts badly usually has the wrong blade on it. We cover width against minimum cutting radius, teeth per inch, tooth form, and when a bi-metal or carbide blade earns several times its price.

For which need, in band saw blades

Finding the length the bandsaw imposes

Blade length is imposed to the millimeter by the saw: it is the first thing to check, before any consideration of cutting.

Wei Shuqiang TCT 4,390 × 35 mm

Resawing straight

A wide blade does not deflect and follows the fence. That is what separates a usable resaw from a wavy cut.

AYAO 93-1/2 × 3/8 in, 6 TPI, 2 pack

Cutting tight curves

The narrower the blade, the smaller the radius can be. A wide blade simply will not turn.

Uddeholm 1,400 × 6 mm, 6 TPI, pack of 5

For whom, within band saw blades

Resawing and breaking down
Wide blade, few teeth, hook tooth form. It is the configuration that turns a bandsaw into a breaking-down machine.
Scrollwork
Narrow blade, fine teeth. The minimum radius follows from the width, and forcing a wide blade round a curve twists it permanently.
Resawing and scrolling on the same machine
A medium-width blade does both moderately. Many workshops keep two blades and change in five minutes.

What each advantage costs, on band saw blades

Width against cutting radius
It is the bandsaw's fundamental trade-off and it has no solution: a blade cannot be both rigid and able to turn tightly.
Tooth pitch against finish
A coarse pitch clears sawdust on thick cuts and leaves a rough edge. A fine pitch gives a good surface and clogs in thick wood.
Carbon steel against bi-metal
Carbon costs little and dulls fast; bi-metal lasts several times longer for a higher price. In regular use, bi-metal works out cheaper.

Before buying band saw blades

How do I find my saw's blade length?

It is in the manual, or measured by running a flexible tape around the path of the old blade. A few millimeters out and correct tensioning becomes impossible.

What width for what radius?

Approximately: 6 mm (0.24 in) for a 15 mm (0.59 in) radius, 10 mm (0.39 in) for 40 mm (1.57 in), 13 mm (0.51 in) for 70 mm (2.76 in). Beyond a 20 mm (0.79 in) blade you barely turn at all.

How many teeth per inch?

At least three teeth must be engaged in the thickness being cut. In thick wood, a coarse pitch; in thin plywood, a fine one, or the blade grabs.

Why does my bandsaw blade break in the same place?

It is the weld, weakened by excessive tension or badly set guides. A properly tensioned, properly guided blade lasts months.

Does a new bandsaw blade need breaking in?

A few slow cuts in softwood refine the edge and noticeably extend its life. Five well-invested minutes.

How should blades be stored?

Coiled in three loops, in a sleeve or a card wrap, away from damp. A rusty blade cuts badly and breaks sooner.

What is blade drift?

The natural angle at which each blade cuts, never exactly parallel to the fence. It is measured on an offcut and compensated by angling the fence.

Is a bimetal blade worth it on wood?

It costs three times more and lasts five to ten times longer on hardwood or reclaimed stock with nails in it. On clean softwood, carbon steel is still the winning sum.

What to remember about band saw blades

The length is imposed, the width is chosen by the curves you have to cut, and the tooth pitch by the thickness. A properly tensioned blade with set guides lasts months; badly set, it breaks at the weld within hours.
