The best clamps and cauls for 2026

You never have enough, and the ones you have are the wrong length. We compare parallel clamps, F-clamps, sash clamps and band clamps on force, jaw squareness and bar deflection — and cover cauls, which do what more clamps cannot.

  5. Stier cast iron body clamp with parallel jaws, product photograph

STIER 904870 body clamp, 800 mm

Sold singly, which is honest: the throat depth and not the capacity is what decides whether it can reach your joint.

    Capacity
    800 mm (31.5 in)
    Clamping force
    6,000 N
    Throat
    95 mm (3.74 in)

    Amazon reference
    B08KSS1VSG (identical on 5 markets)
    EAN
    4251709619673
    • 6,000 N through large parallel jaws, which keeps a carcase square as it closes
    • Replaceable caps, so the part that marks the timber is the part you replace
    • A 95 mm (3.74 in) throat is the real limit — it decides how far in from the edge you can clamp

Best for: Gluing up cabinet carcases where the joint is within 95 mm of the edge

For which need, in clamps & cauls

Glueing up a panel

A panel glue-up needs a clamp every twenty to thirty centimeters, alternated above and below. It is quantity that decides, not individual force.

BESSEY KRE-SET-A parallel clamp set, 12 pieces

Clamping hard without marking

The useful clamping force depends on the joint. Over-tightening squeezes the glue out of the joint and starves it, which weakens the bond instead of strengthening it.

KISTEK Set of four one-handed bar clamps

Opening to the width of the panel

An eighty-centimeter clamp will not close a one-meter tabletop. The stated clamping capacity is this aisle's first figure, ahead of force.

For whom, within clamps & cauls

Panel glue-ups
Long sash clamps, and plenty of them. It is the item you never have enough of, and the one you improvise badly.
Carcase assembly
One-handed bar clamps or spring clamps, quick to place with one hand while the other holds the piece. Speed counts more than force.
Small pieces and repairs
Light screw clamps and cauls. A big clamp on a small piece crushes it before holding it.

What each advantage costs, on clamps & cauls

Force against marking
Energetic clamping on softwood leaves a permanent impression. Protective cauls solve the problem and always go missing at the wrong moment.
Speed against power
One-handed bar clamps go on with one hand and clamp less; screw clamps clamp hard and need two hands. A workshop needs both.
Quantity against quality
For a panel glue-up, eight average clamps beat three excellent ones. It is the one aisle where number frankly comes first.

Before buying clamps & cauls

How many clamps do I need?

Always more than you think. For a panel glue-up, one every twenty to thirty centimeters, alternated above and below so the panel does not bow.

Should I clamp very hard?

No. Even pressure is enough; excessive clamping squeezes the glue out of the joint and starves it, giving a weaker bond.

How do you avoid clamp marks on wood?

Softwood cauls between the clamp and the piece. On light timber, metal jaws also leave black stains where they meet glue.

Why does my panel bow during glue-up?

All the clamps on the same side. Alternating them above and below balances the forces and keeps the panel flat.

How long should it stay clamped?

The setting time stated by the glue, generally thirty minutes to an hour under pressure, and twenty-four hours before working the piece.

Can squeezed-out glue be removed?

Take it off when it is rubbery, neither liquid nor hard. Wiped wet, it penetrates the wood and shows at the finish.

Are spring clamps enough?

For holding in position, yes. For a structural glue-up they do not apply sufficient or even pressure.

Are screw and lever clamps equivalent?

A screw reaches higher force and meters it finely; a lever is faster and less adjustable. A workshop ends up with both — the screw for glue-ups, the lever for holding.

What to remember about clamps & cauls

In glue-ups the number of clamps counts more than their force, and over-tightening harms the joint. Alternate above and below to keep the panel flat, protect the wood with cauls, and remove the glue while it is rubbery.

A quick look at clamps & cauls

Clamps & cauls, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. The figure published most often across these 5 products is quantity, given by 3 of them — short of the four in five a column needs to compare rather than to display gaps. Each product page says what its own maker published.
