Every figure below is a manufacturer
specification read off the listing itself. The judgments are ours.
What the specification says
Four pipe clamp heads for 3/4 inch pipe. Pipe is not supplied.
The economics
A set of four 1.5 m (5 ft) sash clamps is a substantial purchase. Four pipe clamp heads
plus four lengths of pipe from a builders’ merchant costs a fraction of it, and
if you later need two meters you buy two meters of pipe rather than two new
clamps.
The compromise is stiffness, and it is real: a proper sash clamp bar is a rolled
section designed not to bend, and a water pipe is not.
What comes up most often
How long a pipe can I use?
Longer than is sensible. 3/4 inch pipe flexes measurably over two meters under clamping pressure, and the flex both reduces the force and bows the assembly. For very long work, two shorter clamps in the middle beat one long one at the end.
Do they mark the timber?
Steel heads on bare wood do, yes. Offcuts of scrap between the jaw and the workpiece solve it, and they also spread the pressure — which is what a caul does. Keep a box of them near the bench.
