Bosch PBD 40 review

The longest stroke of the European bench drills here — 90 mm (3.54 in) — and the only one that states its capacity in wood as well as steel.

The end of it The most capable of the European drill presses here for woodworking specifically, and it says so in its own specification.

Every figure is a manufacturer specification, read off the listing itself, and the judgments are ours — drawn from how the specification behaves in this class of machine and from what long-term owners consistently report. Where a figure is missing, we say so rather than fill it in.

What the specification says

710 W, 13 mm (0.51 in) maximum diameter in steel, 40 mm (1.57 in) in wood, 90 mm (3.54 in) quill stroke. Part number 0603B07000.

Why the stroke changes the machine

Every other drill press on this page tops out around 50 to 60 mm (1.97 to 2.36 in) of travel. At 90 mm (3.54 in) this one bores through stock the others cannot reach in a single plunge, and it does so with the alignment intact — which is the entire reason to own a drill press rather than a hand drill and a guide block.

The 40 mm (1.57 in) wood figure

Forstner bits are how furniture makers cut flat-bottomed holes for hinges, hardware and joinery, and they are wide. Rating the machine at 40 mm (1.57 in) in timber tells you directly that a 35 mm (1.38 in) hinge cup is within its capability, which is the question most buyers actually have.

The good side, and the catch

Strengths

  • 90 mm (3.54 in) of quill stroke — nearly double the Scheppach DP16VLS
  • States its capacity in wood separately from steel, which almost no listing does
  • 40 mm (1.57 in) in wood covers most Forstner work

Compromises

  • Not sold on amazon.com
  • A bench machine, so the column height limits tall workpieces

What comes up most often

Why publish two diameter figures?

Because they measure different limits. 13 mm (0.51 in) in steel is what the motor and chuck will drive through metal; 40 mm (1.57 in) in wood is what the same machine will bore with a Forstner bit, where the cut is wider but far easier. A listing that gives only one number is giving you half the answer.

What does 90 mm (3.54 in) of stroke let you do?

Bore through a 75 mm (2.95 in) post in one plunge, or drill a deep mortice-style hole without resetting the work. It is the difference between a machine for hardware holes and one for joinery.
