  • FFP3 — the class hardwood dust warrants
  • Head straps rather than ear loops, which is what holds a seal during physical work
  • No valve, so exhaled air passes back through the filter and the mask gets hot

Best for: A shared workshop, where the people around you need protecting as much as you do

Every figure below is a manufacturer specification read off the listing itself. The judgments are ours.

What the specification says

FFP3 filter class with at least 99% filtration, no valve, head straps, an adjustable metal nose clip, five layers including a meltblown filter medium, certified to EN 149:2001+A1:2009. Twenty per box, individually wrapped.

FFP2 or FFP3 — the number is the whole decision

FFP2 filters about 94% of airborne particles; FFP3 about 99%. Both are comfortable, both are cheap, and only one of them is the right answer for hardwood dust, which the IARC classifies as a Group 1 carcinogen. The harmful fraction is the part still airborne hours after the machine stops, long after the visible chips have settled.

Individually wrapped is not marketing

A box of loose masks kept in a workshop collects on its own the dust the masks are meant to exclude, and the inside of an open mask is the surface that goes against your face. Sealed packets are the difference between a clean mask in six months and a decorative one.

What comes up most often

Valve or no valve?

A valve makes an hour in a mask far more bearable, because exhaled air leaves without heating the filter or fogging your glasses. It also sends that air out unfiltered, which protects nobody else. Alone in a workshop the valved version is the comfortable choice; sharing the space with anyone, this is the right one.

Why do head straps matter?

Because a mask filters nothing without a seal, and ear loops pull the mask against the face from the sides only. Head straps pull from above and below, which is what keeps the edge sealed while you are bending over a bench or turning your head. It is also why a beard defeats any of them entirely.
