Holzmann SB4116HN review

A floor-standing pillar drill 1.63 m (5 ft) tall — and one that needs a three-phase supply most workshops do not have.

The end of it A real workshop machine, and one whose supply requirement rules it out for most home shops. Read the voltage first.

Every figure is a manufacturer specification, read off the listing itself, and the judgments are ours — drawn from how the specification behaves in this class of machine and from what long-term owners consistently report. Where a figure is missing, we say so rather than fill it in.

What the specification says

600 W, 1,630 mm (64.2 in) overall height, 400 V three-phase supply. Part number SB4116HN_400V.

The voltage is the review

Everything else about this machine is ordinary and sound. The 400 V requirement is what decides whether you can own it, and it appears only as a suffix on a part number — not in the title, not in a features list.

A domestic European supply is single-phase 230 V. Running a 400 V machine from it requires a phase converter or a supply upgrade, both of which cost real money and neither of which is mentioned anywhere near the buy button.

We are leading with it because a reader who misses it buys a machine that cannot be switched on.

If you do have three-phase

Then this is a genuine floor-standing pillar drill at €398 in Germany, from a maker of workshop machinery rather than consumer tools, and it is good value at that.

The good side, and the catch

Strengths

  • Floor-standing, so the column takes work a bench machine cannot
  • 1,630 mm (64.2 in) of height means large workpieces stand under the spindle
  • Holzmann builds workshop machinery rather than consumer tools

Compromises

  • 400 V three-phase — not available in most domestic workshops
  • Not sold on amazon.com

What comes up most often

Can I run a 400 V machine at home?

Not from a standard domestic socket. You need a three-phase supply, which most homes in Europe do not have, or a converter — which adds cost and complexity. Check this before anything else; it is the specification that disqualifies the machine for most readers of this page, and it is buried at the end of a part number.

What does floor-standing give you over a bench press?

Height under the spindle. A bench machine sits on a bench, so a tall workpiece has nowhere to go; a floor machine has a meter and a half of column, and the table drops down the column to make room. For drilling into the end of a long board it is the only practical option.
