Bosch Professional GKF 12V-8 review

A one-handed 12 V edge router at €140 that publishes the one number that matters on a trimmer — the collet size.

The end of it The most honest small router in this group: it says what shank it takes, and at €140 that is most of what you need to know.

Every figure is a manufacturer specification, read off the listing itself, and the judgments are ours — drawn from how the specification behaves in this class of machine and from what long-term owners consistently report. Where a figure is missing, we say so rather than fill it in.

What the specification says

A Bosch Professional 12 V cordless edge router, part number 06016B0002, taking an 8 mm (0.31 in) cutter shank, with a brushless motor. Bosch describes an innovative shape, low weight and a center of gravity placed for one-handed control, and a compact build made possible by the brushless motor and the 12 V system. The delivery list is the tool alone.

The collet decides which cutters you can buy

A collet is not a chuck. It grips the shank along its whole length and it is machined for one diameter, so a cutter that is nearly the right size is a cutter that will creep out of the tool under load. Cutters are sold in 6 mm, 8 mm (0.31 in) and 1/4 inch, and on the bigger machines in 12 mm and 1/2 inch, and those sizes are not interchangeable however close two of the numbers look.

Read the collet off the machine before spending anything on a cutter set, and buy reducers from the tool maker rather than from the cheapest listing. This is the one accessory where the fit is the entire function.

This listing does what most in the category do not: it puts the collet size in the product name. GKF 12V-8 — the 8 is the shank. That single decision saves a buyer from a drawer of unusable cutters.

Where a 12 V router fits

It fits in one hand, against the edge of a workpiece that is already clamped, for the jobs that are awkward with a two-handed machine: rounding over a table edge, chamfering a batten, trimming a laminate overhang flush, easing an arris. It does not replace a plunge router, and Bosch is not claiming it does — there is no plunge base and no depth figure on this listing.

The good side, and the catch

Strengths

  • States the collet size, which the Makita above does not
  • Brushless motor in a 12 V body, so it stays genuinely small
  • Bosch Professional 12 V batteries are cheap and shared across a large range

Compromises

  • An 8 mm (0.31 in) collet only — no 6 mm (0.24 in) cutters without a reducer
  • No speed control, no plunge base, no depth figure published
  • No battery or charger included

What comes up most often

Is an 8 mm (0.31 in) collet a limitation?

It is a choice you have to live with. Much of the European cutter market is 8 mm (0.31 in) and the shank is stiffer than 6 mm (0.24 in), so it is the better size where you have the option. But a 6 mm (0.24 in) cutter needs a reducing sleeve, and a 1/4 inch cutter will not go in at all. Check what your existing cutters are before ordering.

Is 12 V enough for a router?

For edge work, yes — rounding over, chamfering, trimming a laminate lipping. The tool is designed around being small enough to hold in one hand against a vertical edge, and the power matches that role. It is not a substitute for a plunge router in a housing joint.

Why is the American price so high?

€326 on amazon.com against €140 in Germany is an import listing rather than local distribution. It is the same tool with shipping, duty and a reseller's margin on top.
