  • Nine grits with no gaps between them, eight sheets of each
  • The grit is marked on the back of every sheet, which sounds trivial until you have a bench full of them
  • P400 is the coarsest sheet — this set removes nothing

Best for: Cutting back between coats of finish, and de-nibbing a varnished surface

Every figure below is a manufacturer specification read off the listing itself. The judgments are ours.

What the specification says

Seventy-two sheets of 230 × 90 mm (9.06 × 3.54 in) electroplated silicon carbide paper, eight each of P400, P600, P800, P1000, P1200, P1500, P2000, P2500 and P3000, usable wet or dry, grit marked on the back.

Read the grit range before buying

This turned up under a search for a general sandpaper assortment, and it is not one. There is nothing here below P400, so it cannot flatten a surface, level a joint or take off a machining mark. Everything it does happens after the belt sander and usually after the first coat of finish.

Sheets and blocks

At 230 × 90 mm (9.06 × 3.54 in) a sheet tears neatly into pieces that wrap a cork block or fold into three for hand use. Folding in three matters: two abrasive faces rubbing together destroy each other, and a three-fold keeps every face against something soft.

What comes up most often

What is wet sanding for on wood?

Almost always for the finish rather than the timber. Water or white spirit floats the swarf away instead of letting it clog the paper, which is what lets very fine grits keep cutting. On bare wood, water raises the grain; on a cured varnish or oil film, it is how you get a surface flat before the next coat.

Do I need anything above P1000 on wood?

On the timber itself, no — the grain closes and further sanding only polishes the surface so it takes stain unevenly. On a finish, yes: the very fine end of this set is for cutting back lacquer and for bringing an oiled surface to a sheen. Which is why the pack starting at P400 is a statement about what it is for.
