Black+Decker Workmate WM825 review

The folding bench that has been in every garage for fifty years — and still the cheapest way to hold work at a sensible height.

The end of it Not a woodworking bench, and an extremely useful object. Know which you are buying.

Every figure is a manufacturer specification, read off the listing itself, and the judgments are ours — drawn from how the specification behaves in this class of machine and from what long-term owners consistently report. Where a figure is missing, we say so rather than fill it in.

What the specification says

A folding workbench with an adjustable clamping top and movable dogs, part number WM825.

Why it is on a woodworking site

Because a great many workshops start here, and because it does one thing better than a proper bench: it grips odd shapes. The two halves of the top move independently, so a tapered leg or a door edge is held securely without a vice.

Where it stops

Mass. A bench’s real specification is how much it weighs, because that is what resists a plane stroke and absorbs a chisel blow. This one folds flat, which is the opposite design goal, and no amount of technique compensates.

The good side, and the catch

Strengths

  • The top itself is a vice — the whole surface clamps
  • Folds flat, which in a small workshop decides whether it exists at all

Compromises

  • Light — it will move under a hand plane
  • The clamping top is not flat enough to be a reference surface

What comes up most often

Can it replace a real workbench?

For machine work, cutting and assembly, largely yes. For hand tool work, no: a light bench moves under a plane stroke and bounces under a chisel, and its two-part top is not flat enough to reference a board against. Those are the jobs a heavy bench exists for.

What is it genuinely best at?

Holding awkward things. The whole top is a vice with movable dogs, so a door, a pipe or an irregular casting can be gripped in ways a conventional bench vice cannot manage.
